Little Angel Addison

When God calls little children to dwell with Him above,
We mortals sometime question the wisdom of His love.
For no heartache can compare with the death of one small child,
Who does so much to make our world seem wonderful and mild.
Perhaps God tires of calling the aged to his fold,
So, He picks a little rosebud, before it can grow old.

God knows how much we need them, so He only takes a few,
To make the land of Heaven more beautiful to view,
The saddest word a loved-one knows will always be “GOOD-BYE”.
So when sweet Addison departed, we who are left behind-
Must realize God really needs her…precious Angels are hard to find.

Addison's Story
written 8.3.2005

Addison Nicole McDorman was born in Wellington, Kansas to Keira and Darren on January 18, 2005. She came into this world at a stellar 5 lbs. 8 oz. and 17 ½ inches long. She arrived just in time for Big Brother Andrew’s 10th birthday. She was just about the size of a small football for Andrew to play with. She was a prizefighter from the time she was born, capturing many hearts and fighting to keep loving all her life.

At the age of 4 weeks, she was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 Syndrome, also known as Edwards Syndrome, which often shortens a child’s life to a month or less. At this time we were blessed with our Hospice nurse Shelly, who today is not only our nurse but also our friend. With lots of love and excellent care, she lived 6 ½ beautiful months to the fullest. She gave more joy in her 6 months of life than many do in a lifetime, and was not restricted to home.

She went on an adventurous road trip to California with her parents and Andrew where she took a walk on the beach and met the rest of her California family. She attended her Aunt Moo’s Bat Mitzvah and celebrated her first Easter. She also watched her dad coach many basketball games and didn’t miss any of Andrew’s baseball games. She was their biggest fan!! She attended the mother/daughter banquet with her mom, Grandma T. and Granny “OO”, her Rosebud Ceremony at the Central Christian Church, her Aunt Kendra and Aunt Staci’s graduations, her Aunt Dana’s wedding, Cousin Jalen’s birthday party, and the benefit auction in her honor. She was also a big help picking out the living room furniture at Cousin Jason’s store. She especially enjoyed swimming in their pool with her Daddy.

Addison wore gloves on her hands to keep her from playing with her feeding tube, which was taped to her cheek. She did not care too much at all for the feeding tube or the gloves, which her mom always made her wear. She was excited for visitors to come over for the small chance that someone might sneak a glove off so that she could get her hand to her mouth. We were all taught to not use the word hate, but everyone knows that Addison hated them both.

For most of her life her nourishment was given through a feeding tube, which her dad changed every month. However, for last few weeks it was changed almost every day as she mastered the art of the removal of the tube on her own. About two weeks ago, Darren had a talk with his little girl and let her know that if she would drink an entire bottle, he would remove her feeding tube for good. She must have really liked that idea because she drank a full bottle for the first time, not once, but three times in the days following their conversation.

She grew and grew and was up to a whopping 12 pounds. Her mommy always told her that when she was born she was just a piece of pie, but then she grew so big that she was now the whole pie. That is how she got the nickname “Pie”. Now our big girl Addison has traded in her gloves and feeding tube for a set of angel wings.
